Apu Tankarpata Sunset

Apu Tankarpata in Urubamba is very special and sacred for us, and very powerful for healing and introspection. This Apu it’s a little heartbeat in the area, and not as renowned as other peaks in the Sacred Valley, Tankarpata holds a quiet power, whispering tales of ancient civilizations and timeless connections to the Earth. It takes approximately one hour to get to the top. As you ascend, the air becomes crisp, filled with the scent of eucalyptus and the distant melodies of native birds. Each step brings a sense of tranquility, allowing hikers to shed the distractions of modern life and attune to the rhythms of nature.

Local lore speaks of the mountain as a place of healing and introspection, where shamans would journey to commune with the spirits and seek guidance. The name “Tankarpata” itself is believed to derive from Quechua, reflecting the deep-rooted connection between the land and its ancestral heritage.

It can take us the whole day to hike with Wachuma Medicine and other master plants, depending on the intentions and purposes. Beyond its spiritual allure, Tankarpata is a haven for biodiversity. The trail is adorned with wildflowers, fluttering butterflies, and the occasional sighting of Andean foxes or viscachas.  Also can watch eagles and falcons on the way behind the mountains. The panoramic views from the summit reveal a tapestry of rolling hills, ancient ruins, and the distant silhouette of other Apus, reminding hikers of the harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. Apu Chicon is our main guardian.

That day was very special with a fistful of answers,
under a beautiful dance from many eagles!

Hiking Apu Tankarpata is more than a physical endeavor; it’s an invitation to connect with the land, with history, and with oneself. Whether you’re seeking solitude, spiritual insight, or simply the joy of exploration, Apu Tankarpata offers a path less traveled but profoundly rewarding.
